‘Bit of the GOOD stuff’ – Sharon’s review and some exciting new hemp recipes!

‘Bit of the Good stuff’ is a great blog that will inspire you to do something GOOD for yourself every day! Check out Sharon’s latest review of our GOOD Hemp products and some really yummy recipes for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner using hemp!

I’m really into hemp seed at the moment, and have been using the Good Hemp milk, oil and shelled seeds as a way of adding omega-3 into our meals.  From what I’ve read, hemp is a ’super food’ as it’s packed with nutrition.  Here’s a few facts I found out about hemp today:

  • It is a complete protein, containing all the essential amino acids.  It also has a high protein content (see image below).
  • The globulin edestin in hemp seed closely resembles that found in human blood plasma and is completely compatible with the human digestive system, making it easily digested, absorbed and utilised.
  • Hemp seed contains phytosterols, which have been shown to reduce bad (LDL) cholesterol.
  • Hemp seed has a high content of antioxidants (all part of the Vitamin E family).
  • Hemp seed has the perfect ratio of omega-3 to omega-6.

What an amazing amount of goodness packed into a little seed!

Healthy Eating: Top habits to fall into this autumn

Sprinkle nuts and hemp seeds onto your meals to keep you feeling full, satisfied and healthy this chilly season. It’s that time of year when it starts to get dark depressingly early – by the time we finish work or school it seems like it is ten o’clock at night, when it is really only five. Fall is officially here, and winter is just around the corner. Besides getting darker earlier and colder by the minute, something else starts to happen: we feel hungrier, and we start to eat more and more. While the reasons for this occurrence varies across the board, studies have consistently shown that like clockwork, people generally increase their meal size and eat more around the beginning of November, resulting in a greater caloric consumption.

So what can we do? Besides watching your calories and what specific foods you are eating more closely, there are a few other ways. Here are some of the top foods to keep you full for longer, while adding that extra nutritional boost your body needs to getthrough the cooler months ahead:

Hemp Seeds – While the hemp plant is closely related and resembles the marijuana plant on the outside, inside these two are very very different. Considered one of the top vegetarian sources of protein, the hemp seed contains all 20 amino acids, including the nine essential amino acids our bodies cannot produce.

One serving (2 tablespoons) is an excellent source of fiber as well as a dozen vitamins and minerals including Vitamin E, iron, magnesium, thiamine, riboflavin, phosphorus and manganese. If that is not enough, hemp seeds are also one of the highest plant based sources of essential fatty acids – beating out most nuts and even flax seeds as well as offer the perfect 3:1 ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3.

Why is this so important? In short, excessive amounts of Omega-6 fatty acids and a very high Omega-6 to Omega-3 ratio, commonly found in most Western diets, may be a contributing factor for many diseases, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, and inflammatory and autoimmune disease. So don’t be afraid to sprinkle these seeds onto your salad, yogurt or morning bowl of cereal. Not only will you load yourself up with nutrients to keep you healthy all winter long, but the combination of the “good” fat and protein content will also keep you feeling full until your next meal.

What Are the Benefits of Eating Shelled Hemp Seeds?

Shelled Hemp Seeds

Energy

The combination of calories, complex carbohydrates and protein in hemp seeds provides long-lasting energy. Shelled Hemp Sees have been shown to increase levels of energy without other stimulants like caffeine and sugar. They provide more energy with less fillers, like sugar and saturated fat, than common energy bars.

Appetite and Weight

hemp weight lossThe amount of protein in hemp seeds is effective in curbing hunger, especially between meals. They are a healthy addition to a weight loss plan since they provide essential nutrients such as protein, essential fatty acids, fiber, vitamins and minerals without adding an excess of calories, starches and sugars. Their effect on hunger results in healthier eating habits such as choosing fresh fruits and vegetables over pastas and breads. The weight lost with the assistance of hemp hearts is unlikely to be regained, because it is a daily dietary adjustment rather than a temporary fix.

Digestion

High in fiber, shelled hemp seeds have many health benefits related to the digestive system. Fiber consumption is essential for a healthy digestive system and keeps bowel movements regular. A digestive system with plenty of fiber is able to efficiently remove wastes from the intestines on a daily basis, which is a preventative measure for intestinal diseases. Soluble fiber works in the intestines to lower levels of LDL cholesterol, and insoluble fiber has been linked to lower risks of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Also, hemp seeds are easily digestible by the human body.

Cellular Health

Hemp and Cellular Health The balance of essential fatty acids paired with the complete protein found in hemp hearts promotes cellular recovery and development. Larken Bunce, an educator and clinical herbalist, states:

“Hemp’s unique fatty acid composition and balance can have significant impact on inflammatory processes and cell membrane activities, which are the foundation of numerous chronic diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, cancers, neurodegenerative disorders, hypersensitivities and auto-immune conditions.”

The high concentration of essential fatty acids found in hemp seeds also supports the transportation of oxygen to cells throughout the body. The presence of oxygen in cell membranes helps to block viruses, fungi and bacteria.

PROTEIN IN HEMP SEED

Composition

Hemp seeds are 44 percent oil, 33 percent protein and 12 percent carbohydrates, primarily fiber. Hemp oil, extracted from hemp seeds, is the richest source of polyunsaturated essential fatty acids, reports the North American Industrial Hemp Council. These fatty acids support brain function and heart health.

Shelled Hemp Seeds

Overview

You can add shelled hemp seeds to cereal, salads or baked goods. Well-known for their high omega-3 fatty acid content, hemp seeds are also rich in protein. Unlike many plant proteins, hemp seeds contain a complete amino acid profile, making them a good source of protein.

Protein Types

Proteins are either complete or incomplete. Complete proteins, usually found in animal products, provide all the essential amino acids that your body cannot produce on its own. Incomplete proteins, usually found in vegetables and grains, lack one or more of these amino acids. Hemp contains all the amino acids necessary to make it a complete protein.

Protein Quality

In addition to the amino acid content, the ratio of these amino acids defines a protein’s quality. Hemp seeds contain a desirable ratio of amino acids, making it closer to the quality of animal-based proteins than any other plant, except for soy. The protein in hemp consists of 33 percent albumin and 67 percent edestine, which are readily digested by your body.

Amount

In a 3 tbsp. serving of hemp seed, weighing 30 g, you get 11 g of protein. Compare this to 5 g of protein contained in 30 g of sesame seeds or 4 g found in 30 g of chia seeds. A 3-oz. serving of extra-firm tofu contains 9 g and 3 oz. of chicken breast contains 27 g.

Benefits

For vegetarians and vegans who can sometimes be deficient in protein, hemp seed is a high-quality option. Soy contains some compounds that actually interfere with its ability to be absorbed optimally. Hemp does not seem to contain these compounds, making it more available to your body for use for muscle synthesis and energy.

BBC news: Surrey hemp plants targeted by thieves

Thieves have been stealing plants related to cannabis in the mistaken belief the crop has a psychoactive effect, police have said.

Surrey Police said hemp plants growing in fields along the A25 in Guildford, Dorking and Reigate have been targeted.

Supt Matt Bristow said the plants were being grown for use in the production of fibre and oils.

Hemp is related to cannabis, but contains only trace amounts of THC, the substance found in marijuana.

Mr Bristow said: “We believe thieves are targeting the hemp plants for use as cannabis but these hemp plants have been specifically cultivated for industrial purposes.

The level of THC was “extremely low and unlikely to have any effect”, he said.
