Omega 3 Linked to Lower Body Weight

I met a lovely lady a few months ago who described herself as a “Fats Campaigner” – she spends her time educating people on Good Fats and Bad Fats. I think it is really important that people are doing this. So many assume that all fats are bad and are not aware of the difference between those that are essential to life and those that just stick straight on your love handles…

So, I was very pleased to see an article with the same title as this blog on Nutra-Ingredients.com. It completely defies the myth that all fats should be cut out of the diet if you want to lose weight – in fact, the study suggests that:

“Increased blood levels of the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA is linked to lower incidence of obesity”

The experiment findings were reported in the British Journal of Nutrition, showing that overweight and obese people have blood levels of omega-3 fatty acids almost 1 per cent lower than people with a healthy weight.

“Our findings suggest that n-3 PUFA may play an important role in weight status and abdominal adiposity,” wrote the researchers, led by Professor Monohar Garg from the University of Newcastle, and president elect of the Nutrition Society of Australia.

Other studies have also suggested a link between Omega-3 and lower body weight, so there is growing evidence on this topic. It all seems to go to show that a balanced diet is the best way to maintain a healthy weight – one that includes all the Good Fats (like the ones in GOOD OIL)!
